WSU goes to SEED
An on-campus farmers market opened to the delight of patrons who so swamped the vendors that many sold out before the end of the first day. The 4th Wednesday Farmers Market is a project of SEED Wayne (Sustainable Food Systems Education and Engagement in Detroit); a campus-community collaboration dedicated to building sustainable food systems at WSU and in Detroit neighborhoods. Eastern Market Corp. and Earthworks Urban Farm are key partners. Other SEED projects include a Warrior Demonstration Garden near the Undergraduate Library, where students grow herbs and vegetables primarily for dining hall meals; cafeteria composting; and policy-making at the soup kitchen table, where clients from the Capuchin Soup Kitchen provide input in planning and policy processes to increase access to health foods in the community. Organized by Kami Pothukuchi, associate professor of geography and urban planning, the project is supported by a $100,000 gift from the Ford Motor Co. Fund.
