Biomedical engineering may not sound glamorous, but Associate Professor Cynthia Bir has a starring role in the Fox Sports Network series Sports Science and a National Geographic Channel feature called Super Strength, both airing on cable. The shows demonstrate how principles of physics and biomechanics, applied to athletes, can be brought to life via the small screen. For example, Bir worked with Chris “Skywalker” Lowrey, a dunk champion, to measure his vertical leap and forces that allow him to jump over a sports car on the way to a slam dunk.
